Institutes of Biomedical Sciences, Shanxi University (IBMS) is the first biomedical research institute in the Mid-West Region, and the fourth of China. It is actively founded by Shanxi University as a key integrated institute and formally founded in May 2017. The laboratory and teaching infrastructure of IBMS is 2700 m². There are four research centers and three high level experiment platform in IBMS, including human serious infectious diseases and zoonosis research center, Mid-West high-incidence cancer research center, human rare genetic diseases research and application center, stem cell technology and application center; molecular biology, cell biology and experimental animal platform. IBMS finished the first batch of 50 million yuan worth of experimental instruments and equipment procurement projects, including flow cytometer, laser cell sorter, cell metabolic analyzer, living cells workstation, ultra-high resolution living cells workstation, ultra-high and high-speed centrifuge, a series of multi-functional fluorescence microscope, digital quantitative PCR, quantitative PCR and molecular interaction instrument, etc. More advanced equipment will be subsequently purchased to ensure the progress of high level frontier exploratory research. In addition, Scientific Instrument Center of Shanxi University would also provide research and instrument support for IBMS, including photon microscopy, confocal microscope, ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometer.

     Research scientists of IBMS have excellent overseas research experience and strong research skills, and come from high level universities and research institutions around the world, such as University of Cambridge, University of Dundee, the Roslin Institute, University of St Andrews, University of Reading, University of Cologne, University of California, Case Western Reserve University and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. IBMS currently focus research on human serious infectious diseases and anthropozoonosis and their development of their treatment, Mid-West high-incidence cancer research and molecular targeting treatment, human rare genetic diseases research and treatment, stem cell technology and application. To achieve sustainable development goals “combining foundation and application, combining experimental and clinical”, IBMS has established excellent long-term cooperative relationship with Shanxi Medical University, Shanxi Provincial People’s Hospital, Shanxi Provincial Cancer Hospital, Shanxi Center for Disease Control and Prevention and other units within Shanxi Province.

     IBMS values the international cooperation and exchanges, and has scientific research cooperation with high level universities and research institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Singapore, etc. Well-known research scientists are regularly invited, meanwhile excellent graduate students are arranged for international exchange and cooperation. In addition, IBMS also arranges funding and gives reward to graduates who publish academic papers on top international journals, according to the impact factor. Undergraduate students who win university and provincial awards for experiment projects will also be rewarded.

     IBMS has strong research and teaching strength, advanced scientific instruments, superior experimental condition, well-equipped teaching facilities, and academic atmosphere. There are a total of 14 high level research scientists, including 8 professors/researchers, 3 associate professors/ deputy researchers, 3 lecturers.
